My Goals 2014

Goals

1.I am the fastest girl in the class.
I got 2nd in the Hakinakina Cross country too.
2. I can write 5 sentences in story-writing now.
I need to learn to write longer sentences.
3. I have gone up from Level 3 to Level 8.
There are lots of hard words in the books I read now.

The Arts

We have been talking about the Arts in Inquiry. We know that there are 4 Arts that we do.
These are Dance, Drama, Visual Arts such as Crayon and Dye and painting and Music.
We have been doing lots of singing. We sing waiata at Assembly every day and in class.
Mrs Bennett puts the songs up on a data projector and we sing the words and listen
to them on the ipad. We also use instruments as well. We kani kani in class
and at lunchtimes, when the music is on. We have been doing lots of visual Art
such as crayon and dye, shape pictures, collage, painting, masks and pattern pictures
as well as Maori Art.
We also learnt the Legends of Maui and the North Island and Maui and the sun,
as well as fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs.
We had turns saying them back to the class and the preschool. We used finger puppets too.

I liked making the cat mask best. I was a cheetah.

Writing

I have been learning to write better stories. I want to learn to write and spell all my own words.
I use a dictionary or word cards or alphabet cards to help me with words.
I am learning to fix up my spelling by myself.
I like writing stories.(Anahera)
I have been encouraging Anahera to write longer stories
and to start spelling many of her own words.
She is getting better all the time.
She can write a full page now.

Hakinakina Cross Country

The school attended the Hakinakina Cross Country which included 5 schools.
They were Riverslea, PakiPaki, Mangateretere, Whare Tapere and Omahu.
We got lots of placings. The tamariki were amazing.
In the Year 0-1 boys Boyden got 2nd and Van 3rd.
In the Year 0-1 girls Paskayl got 3rd.
In the Year 2 boys Kauri got 1st and Paora 3rd.
In the Year 2 girls Anahera got 2nd . ( Mrs Bennett)

August

Duffy Theatre

The Duffy Theatre was awesome. It was funny with lots of things happening. They go to 250 schools around the country.
Duffy’s Uncle didn’t like reading but Rose and Duffy got him to read a book and that helped him
with his Rugby League game and he scored the winning goal. ( Mrs B)
I liked it best when they were dancing.(Anahera)

Commonwealth Games

We studied the Commonwealth Games when they were on. They were in Scotland in Glasgow.
We looked at the Opening and Closing Ceremony on the computer.
We all chose a country. Tamihana got the most medals. His team was England.
We all liked the swimming and the Cycling. We got lots of medals in the cycling.
We talked about all the different sports and practised playing games and sports at school.

Learning

I am learning to read harder books. My goal was Level 10 . I am up to Level 5 now.
I used to be at Level 2 at the beginning of the term.
I can write 3 sentences. I need to learn to write longer stories and do 5.
I like writing stories. Mrs Bennett says that I am good at it.
I am still fast at running. I can go around the whole bike track and not stop.
I like PMP. I am learning to do lots of new things.

I am supporting and motivating Anahera with her reading and writing
She is developing more self confidence and does not invent words now,
but tries to word solve them and make sense of the story.
She is writing interesting stories and attempting to spell many of her own words.
Next we want to improve Anahera's reading levels
and motivate her to produce longer stories independently.

Miharo Learning (Literacy and Numeracy)

I can spell words like 'am' and 'mum' on the alphabet grid. I jump on the letters.
I like playing alphabet bingo with the class. I have won 2 times.
I like to hear stories from Mrs Donaldson.
I am going to learn to spell more words.
My story-writing is getting better,
I know lots of my alphabet now and can play alphabet bingo and find the letters fast.
I am learning to use all the new apps on the ipad too.( Anahera)
Anahera enjoys using the alphabet grid and alphabet bingo.
She is getting better at spelling words on the alphabet grid
and is quick at finding the letters when we play alphabet bingo.
Mrs Donaldson, the librarian comes in just before lunch Mon to Thurs to read 2 stories to the children.
Anahera enjoys these and always listens well.
Her story-writing has improved and she spells a lot of her own words
or locates them from resources like word cards and the dictionary.
Anahera especially enjoyed the Tuakan-teina activity where she made a comic life
on the ipad with Moe Harleen and Kavarn.

Skipping (Jump Rope For Heart)

I am good at skipping. I can do up to 45 skips.
I can run and skip and do ski jump too.
I can also do Cross skip.
My goal is to skip up to 99 soon for Jump Rope day.( Anahera)
The school is involved in a Jump Rope for Heart programme.
Most of Room 2 could not skip. All but one can skip forwards now.
The tamariki are now learning to jump backwards and do skill jumping
such as ski jump and bell jump.
Most children can run around the court skipping.
One boy who could not skip has gone from no skips to 30 on the spot
in just 2 weeks. The programme is for 6 weeks.
On June 13th 2014 we will have a Jump Rope for Heart skipping activity afternoon
for the children and whanau.
Children are setting goals to achieve that afternoon.
The emphasis is on participation and fun. ( Mrs Bennett)

Goals

I support Anahera by helping her with her storywriting.
She is learning to spell words and write sentences with the correct structure.
We have daily running in fitness which she enjoys as her goal is to get faster.
She is making steady progress in Reading and has moved up a level
since coming back into Room 2.
Next term we will work together to make progress in both Reading and Writing.
In Maths she will move into the next classroom for Maths grouping.

Walking Safely

Constable Phil is teaching us to walk safely.
We are learning to cross the road safely.
We know where to stand and know parts of the road such as the kerb and the gutter.

Duffy Role Model Assembly

We had Diana Queenin as our Duffy Role Model. She talked about Dinosaurs
and showed us fossils. She also told us how important it is to read to help our learning.
The children loved the Duffy books that they chose.

ipads

I built a school with Whiore on the ipad. It shows where we learn things.
I had to match the colours and the shapes.(Anahera)
As part of our Geometry unit in Maths the children had to build either a school
or a house in pairs. They had to use attributes such as shapes,pattern,direction,size and colour.
The children worked well together and enjoyed the activity. ( Mrs Bennett)

Storywriting/ Masks

Anahera
I can growl.
I am a big tiger.

Anahera selected the mask on the ipad that she wanted to have a photo with.
She wrote about it and we published her caption
and put the pictures on the classroom wall.
The objective was to stimulate the children's imaginations.
I encouraged her to think about what the tiger would look like and what it would do.

Hakinakina Swimming Sports

We went to the swimming. There were lots of kids there.
I had new togs.I think I liked the swimming races best.(Anahera)
We all had a great afternoon at the Hakinakina Cluster swimming sports.
We were there with TKK, Mangateretere and Omahu.
We had fun races like blowing the little ball across the pool with a straw.
We also had flutter-board and swimming races.
The children loved the free swim in the bigger pool.
They were all awesome and all enjoyed themselves. ( Mrs Bennett)

Nov/Dec

Activities

We have had a busy 2 months. We have had a Biathlon where we ran and biked.
We have started Milk in Schools. It is yummy.
The whole school went in the Kapa Haka festival.
It was fun when we went to Beach Education.
We all loved swimming in the sea and playing in the sand on the beach.
We have been talking about Pay it Forward in Inquiry.
Room 2 have been helping our whanau by being nice and doing things for them.
We had an awesome Disco with Funkman.
Our Christmas party in Room 2 was the best fun.
We played games and had presents and lots of yummy party food.
Khani won the pass the parcel.
Miharo is fun. Miharo is awesome. ( Mrs Bennett)

I liked the Room 2 Xmas party best.
We had lots of yummy food and a present too.

Preschool Tuakana- teina

We love to have the Preschool visit us . They have a story with us and we play together.
We help them with things and show them where things are.
They like coming to see us all in Room 2 as well.
I helped looked after Paskyll last time.

PMP

We have Diane come and take PMP with us. She is from Flax Rock.
We have fun and learn lots of different ways to move with our bodies.
We get fit too.
I am good at balancing. It is fun.

Ronald McDonald

Ronald McDonald came to talk to us about road safety.
We knew the song about Stop Look and Listen as we had learnt that in class with Mrs Bennett.
Ronald McDonald was funny. He lost his sock . We had to help him find it.
He made Mrs Bennett disappear and then come back again but she was really just behind the screen.
She jumped out and gave us a surprise.
I laughed at Ronald McDonald and Mrs Bennett.

September

Writing Moderation 20/9/13

This moderation was done to send away to another school for comparison.
I used the ipad and videoed Anahera talking about 'A Moment in Time.'
She talked about the Snow trip and Hot Pools. I assessed it as "above" (1iib).



I talked all about the mountain trip and what we did. Mrs Bennett videoed me.
I had fun throwing snowballs and I liked swimming in the hot pools.
I went in both pools.

Whakapapa Mountain Snow Trip

I loved the snow trip. It was fun. I threw snowballs at the kids.
I also went down the mountain on a sled by myself.
I liked swimming at the hot pools too.
The water was nice. (Anahera)
Off we all went at 7am up to Wakapapa for the mountain snow trip.
The kids and whanau and staff were all excited and we had a great time.
I had 11 children go and 8 had not been to the snow before. They went down the mountain on
sleds and a boogie board and threw snowballs.
We then went to the Tokaanu hot pools where they swam for over an hour.

Inquiry Keynote presentation.

I talked to the whole school about the 1980's and the production that we had.
It was a keynote on the data projector. I talked about games and the songs we did for the Production.
They were I love Rock and Roll, The Lion Sleeps tonight and Dancing in the Street.
I also have played some of the games like Hungry Hippo and Mousetrap.( Anahera)
As a class we learnt about the 1980's and used google search engine to find out about clothes, games,
computers and movies. We made a keynote presentation which we presented as reporting back to the school.

Award for Reading and Writing

My Nan will be proud of me. I got a book for trying hard in Reading and writing.
I can write sentences on the writing pad, on my ipad now.( Anahera)

Anahera got an award at The Duffy Theatre performance for great effort in Reading and Writing.
She is trying hard in class and making some good progress as a result.

School Production 29/8/13

Dynamo Dukebox






I got new clothes for the production.
I danced with Hemara for the Rock and Roll.
Everyone came to watch me. ( Anahera)

The tamariki were amazing. They danced and sang their way through
nearly an hour of music from the 1970's, 1980's and 1990's.
Even the teachers line danced to Achy Breaky Heart and
were zombies to Michael Jackson's Thriller.
Miharo Roll n Rolled to music from the 1980's.
They did I love Rock and Roll. The lion Sleeps Tonight
and Dancing in the Street. What a wonderful performance. ( Mrs Bennett)

Discovery Making Poi T3

I am making poi. Mrs Bennett helped me tie the wool and cut the bag.
I sang a song with it. (Anahera)
I assisted Anahera by first showing her how to make the poi,
by putting newspaper into a plastic bag.
I had to show her how to screw the newspaper up into a ball
as she had put too much in the bag at first.
I then showed her what length to cut the wool.
I helped her tie it. She then sang E Rere taku poi
in time to the music with the other children.
Anahera was using her thinking and problem solving skills
as well as developing her hand eye co-ordination skills.

Learning Buddies presentation

Sante and Anahera

Matariki 1/7/13- 5/7/13

We had an amazing Matariki week at Riverslea school.
We started Monday with a Dawn tree planting ceremony and whanau, school breakfast.
Tuesday we had a Hakinakina sports day of Maori games with Bridge Pa school.
That was lots of fun. Wednesday we helped prepare for the Hangi on Thursday.
Thursday we had a huge Matariki festival at the school.
The children were amazing with our Kapa Haka and there was a hangi, lots of stalls
and other schools and people and whanau visiting.
We had Irongate, Whare Tapere, the Line Dancers, Karamu and singers and dancers.
Waata was an amazing DJ with the Funkman and PK in charge of music and coordination, sound etc.
The hangi was a highlight with 6-8 Dads, Koros and whanau helping out, as well as whanau such as Roberta and Karina with
serving. Other whanau helped behind the scenes with all the activities, sausage sizzle for the performers etc.
What am amazing successful week.

June

Writing Sample

I went up and down the ramps.
I liked it at Sk8zone.
Mrs Bennett took a video of me and sent it to my Nan on the email.
I wrote a story about Sk8zone.( Anahera)
I encouraged Anahera to express her ideas.
She attempted 3 simple sentences which she read back.
When videoed she extended her story well and talked in sentences about
flipping the scooter and going up and down the ramps fast.
She also talked about how it was fun and she liked it. ( Mrs Bennett)

Learning Buddies

Sante is my learning buddy. She is helping me to learn new apps on the ipad (Anahera)
I assisted Sante and Anahera and encouraged Sante to get Anahera to do it for herself after she has shown her.
I also extended Anahera's skills by teaching her more about making a Book Creator.
Anahera can do most of it independently now and just needs to practise.( Mrs Bennett).

Town Library

21/5/13



I like reading books at the library. Mrs Bennett also read books to us and so did Miss McGrail and Mrs Donaldson.
I loved playing in the playground too. I can go high on the swing now.( Anahera)
Anahera enjoyed looking through all the books in the children's section at the library.
This visit showed her the books available at the library and she enjoyed listening to the books that were read to her
as she sat there very quietly and listened the whole time ( Mrs Bennett)

Maths Learning

I can use the Maths apps by myself now.
I know the shapes and colours and can match them. (Anahera)
Anahera knows all her colours and nearly all her shapes and can count up to 20.
I assisted her by telling her the names of the concepts she was unsure of and prompted her to
name the things as she progressed through the pages. I reinforced her by praising her attempts and guided her with next steps
on how to use several Maths learning apps. ( Mrs Bennett)

Turangawaewae

Mrs Bennett videoed me. I talked about what we had learnt in Inquiry. It was Turangawaewae
and that means our place to stand.I like the Bike Track best. we found out that
we have the best bike track in anywhere. ( Anahera)
Anahera thought about what we discussed in Inquiry. She could ask and answer a question
and could relate new knowledge to other information eg whether we had a better bike track than
at another school in NZ or overseas. She could compare and make a decision based on what she knew
and what she saw on the internet serch engine google ( Mrs Bennett)

I encouraged Anahera to give it a go.

Comic Life

We put in pictures and words and took lots of photos.
I am going to do another one with Tamara soon.(Anahera)
Anahera quickly picked up the skills needed to do a Comic Life. I guided her and Tamara.

Quick Voice- Reading Book

I am getting good at reading stories now.
I read them to Nan too.(Anahera)
I showed Anahera how to record her stories from reading and her browsing box on Quickvoice.
She quickly picked it up and enjoys doing it regularly ( Mrs Bennett)

100's Board

Anahera is recognising numbers and learning to count.
" I am going to count up to 100 soon." ( Anahera)
I showed Anahera how to use the 100's board app and she uses it regularly now to reinforce and extend her counting skills ( Mrs Bennett)

Swimming

I am learning to swim.
I can go right across the pool with a board.
I'm going to get really good at it.( Anahera)
By giving Anahera 1 to 1 in swimming time she increased in her skills and is well on the way to
achieving her goal. She is much more confidence now and resoponds well to the guidance and praise. ( Mrs Bennett).

The Bike Track

I want to go fast on the PUMP track. I fall off if I go fast.
I am going to keep on practising till I don't fall off.(Anahera)
I supported Anahera. I gave her lots of chances to practise on the PUMP track including encouraging her at playtime and lunchtime.
I cheered her on and told her when to go slowly and when to speed up. She can now successfully go around the PUMP track.
She is much faster but still needs to slow down a bit for the big hills. She is very proud of herself, as am I of her. (Mrs Bennett).
